A casino is a facility for certain types of gambling. It is often combined with hotels, restaurants, retail shops or cruise ships and may also offer live entertainment such as concerts or stand up comedy. The word casino may also refer to an establishment owned and operated by the government. In the United States, casinos are most commonly located in cities with legalized gambling, and many offer hotel suites in addition to gaming opportunities.
Gambling probably predates recorded history, with primitive protodice (cut knuckle bones) and carved six-sided dice appearing in some of the world’s oldest archaeological sites. The modern casino, however, is an enormously complex commercial enterprise that includes a wide variety of games and other forms of entertainment. It is not surprising that people who love to gamble flock to these exciting places of opulence and excitement.
In modern times, casinos have become increasingly diversified in the types of games they offer. Besides the usual table and card games, some offer traditional Far Eastern games such as sic bo (which spread to several European and American casinos in the 1990s), fan-tan, and pai gow. They also include electronic games such as slot machines, video poker, and keno.
Something about the environment of a casino encourages people to cheat and steal. These activities, of course, are a major source of income for the casinos. It is for this reason that casinos devote a great deal of time, effort and money to security.
